Telecel's International Calls with Better Rates than the Fixed Network

December 28, 1998

On 23 January 1999, Telecel will significantly reduce international calls’ tariffs, allowing Customers to place international calls with average per minute rates lower than those currently in place in the fixed network.

These reductions are made possible by the full liberalization process of the Portuguese telecommunications’ sector framework, in which a new phase will be initiated in January 1999. From that time on, the international traffic routing, which was in a monopoly controlled by Portugal Telecom, will benefit from free competition and the national mobile operators will be able to establish interconnect agreements with other operators to route its international traffic.

Telecel has been in a process of negotiating better price conditions for its Customers in this type of communications with several national and international operators, including Portugal Telecom.

The new international tariffs will allow Customers of the majority of our pricing plans to place calls, from their mobile phones to the other countries of the EU, Switzerland, United States of America, and Canada at the same per minute rate as national communications to other networks (mobile or fixed) during peak time. Other international destinations will also benefit from important reductions. On average, it will be less expensive to call outside Portugal using Telecel’s network than using the fixed one. In some cases, the price reduction in relation to our current tariffs will be close to 70%.

With this significant reduction, Telecel continues to present to its Customers a quality offer with a competitive price, allowing Customers to enlarge the usage scope of a mobile phone to a type of traffic which represented a minority in mobile communications.
