Lisbon, 10 May 2000 Today Telecel launches new services for its Internet mobile access service.
Using WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) technology, Telecel customers are able to access innovative services such as banking, selected stock exchange information, customised information services, Telecel’s service invoice system and also Porto Editora dictionaries. Telecel is the first operator in Portugal to offer these WAP services.
The TeleMultibanco WAP service allows Telecel customers to carry out most of the operations available on ATM machines via a WAP phone. It is also now possible to set up a personal portfolio of stocks and have the current price information displayed directly on your WAP phone.
Using your Telecel WAP service, you can now receive information on sports, cinema, TV channels, and search for local information on a wide variety of services and subjects such as pharmacies, taxis, trains, police and fire departments and also gain access to GuiaNet’s business directory. In addition you can also access entertainment pages and get horoscopes, jokes and lottery, as well as other services that were launched last November, such as “netc” and CNN news, restaurant guides and weather forecasts. The WAP service also allows more detailed and easy access to “netc” e-mails.
Telecel also announced today the formation of a partnership with Banco 7, the stand alone operation with a specific brand to the Internet banking business of BCP, Portugal’s leading private bank, which will constitute the first online brokerage service, based on WAP technology.
Analysts believe that, in a near future, the majority of Internet access will be made via mobile phones. Telecel anticipates that in 3 to 5 years about 20% of its revenues will come from data traffic, which includes Internet mobile access, SMS and fax.
Besides “netc” portal, Telecel WAP service has other well known partners and content providers, both in English and in Portuguese, such as CNN, Porto Editora and GuiaNet.
