Vodafone Messenger passes 100 million message mark on mobiles

December 11, 2007

Lisbon, 11 December 2007 – Exactly five months after the launch of the Vodafone Messenger service, Vodafone Portugal has revealed that over 100 million chat messages have already been exchanged on the service.

This huge number of chat messages exchanged on Vodafone Messenger has confirmed the importance and usefulness of this form of mobile communication to customers, who currently exchange around one million messages a day on this service.

Vodafone Messenger is an innovative mobile communications service that enables the familiar Windows Live Messenger and Yahoo! Messenger to be used in a simple and convenient way on mobile phones. For only 3 euros a month, Vodafone Portugal customers can chat with their contacts in the same way as if they were in front of their PC.

As the first Vodafone Group operator to launch this service, Vodafone Portugal is the only Portuguese operator to offer it in partnership with Microsoft and Yahoo!.

Vodafone Messenger enables users to chat with the same list of contacts as on their PC, check their contacts’ online status and send and receive emoticons. Customers are always online on the service since, even if they are using other functions of their mobile phones, they are notified when a new message arrives. Users can chat between mobile phones and computers, provided that they have Windows Live Messenger or Yahoo! Messenger installed.

Vodafone Messenger can be accessed directly from the Messages menu of the new phones on sale (such as the Nokia N95 8GB and the Sony Ericsson W910i, two exclusive Vodafone handsets) or the application can be downloaded free, either by sending an SMS to 12345 containing the word ‘IM’ or from the Vodafone live! portal.

The 100 million messages exchanged on the Vodafone Messenger service are evidence of the success of Vodafone’s strong focus on Mobile Internet to provide simple and transparent access via mobile phones to services that customers are used to using on their PC.
