Vodafone Portugal network leads results of Anacom tests

May 17, 2008

Lisbon, 17 May 2008 – Vodafone is the operator with the best overall performance in its mobile communications network, according to tests carried out in September and October 2007 by the Portuguese National Communications Authority (Anacom).

In tests of GSM (2G) technology, the Vodafone network showed the best and most consistent performance overall. In Urban Centres, Vodafone had the best Call Establishment Time (4.5 and 6.5 seconds, respectively, for calls originating and terminating on its network), best accessibility (99.4% and 99.3%, respectively, for calls originating and terminating on its network) and best Call Termination Rate (99.2% and 99.5%, respectively, for calls originating and terminating on the Vodafone network).

Still on GSM (2G) technology, in Road Corridors Vodafone also leads in terms of Call Establishment Time (4.6 and 6.5 seconds, respectively, for calls originating and terminating on its network) and Call Termination Rate (99.3% and 99.6%, respectively, for calls originating and terminating on the Vodafone network).

In tests of UMTS (3G) technology, Vodafone again leads with the best overall performance and most consistent results, showing, for example, the best accessibility (93.5%) and the best Call Establishment Time in Urban Centres (6.3 seconds). To quote Anacom: “In urban centres, the best performance was registered by Vodafone”.

For these tests, voice calls on GSM (2G) technology and videocalls on UMTS (3G) technology were used, as specified by ETSI (European Telecommunications Standards Institute) for this type of testing.

In selecting the test sites, those places where the services are most heavily used were used i.e. the biggest urban centres and principal road corridors. Geographical distribution was also taken into account so as to include the interior regions of Portugal.

In addition to the National Communications Authority tests, Vodafone also performs regular tests of the quality of its network, using the same internationally accepted parameters used by Anacom.
