Lisbon, 22 December 2009 Vodafone today launched the Facebook Messaging service following a direct agreement with Facebook, making it the first operator in Portugal to launch this service via text messages (SMS) and multimedia messages (MMS). Vodafone will have an official presence on the Facebook site and will offer the service to all its mobile customers.
With this new service, Vodafone customers, via a simple SMS, can now carry out the operations that they perform most frequently on the Facebook site directly on their mobile phone – such as, for example, sending and updating messages, posting a comment on the wall or finding and adding new friends.
This text messaging service also allows them to receive a range of notifications, also by SMS, such as wall posts, friend requests, tagging on photos, updates of friends personal messages or received messages.
Vodafone customers can also send photos or videos via MMS, which will be immediately available on the Facebook site.
The service that is available from today enables Vodafone customers to communicate using their mobile phones with their friends in the Facebook community and gives them access to most of the features on the Facebook site.
To activate the service, customers simply need to send an SMS to 12400 containing the text ‘FB’ or access Facebook’s mobile site http://www.facebook.com/mobile/?settings. The service can also be activated from a PC, on the Facebook site at http://www.facebook.com/editaccount.php?notifications#/mobile/?settings.
All notification messages received on mobile phones are free and sending a text message costs just 5 cents. Sending photos or videos is charged at the cost of an MMS inside the Vodafone network in accordance with the customers price plan.
The launch of this service is part of Vodafones major investment in mobile-PC convergence, enabling its customers to use the services they are used to regardless of the form of access, and with a simple and transparent user experience.
