Vodafone to broadcast 2010 FIFA World Cup™ on mobile phones in Portugal

Lisbon, 31 May 2010 – Vodafone Portugal has reached an agreement with FIFA to be a Mobile Broadcaster of the 2010 FIFA World Cup™ and has secured the rights to broadcast the 64 matches of the 2010 FIFA World Cup™ on mobile phones. Vodafone customers will therefore be able to watch all the matches in South Africa live on their 3G mobile phones wherever they are in Portugal.

Almost all the matches will take place at times when most people are not at home (12:30, 15:00 and 19:30), so being able to watch them on a mobile phone will be an advantage so as not to miss the achievements and happenings of the biggest sporting event of the year and, in particular, the Portugal team’s group stage games that will take place on weekdays between 12:30 and 15:00.

In addition to the 64 games broadcast live on Vodafone Mobile TV, customers will also have access to a wide range of information about the 2010 FIFA World Cup™ on the Vodafone mobile portals (Vodafone live! and My Portal) such as the historical archive of the competition (over 500 official videos containing the best moments of all previous FIFA championships), statistics, reports, constantly updated rankings, video footage of the most important moments of the event and daily coverage of the leading teams produced locally in South Africa and dubbed into Portuguese. As the games take place the videos of match highlights will become available (goals, cards and other important moves).

A novelty of this FIFA World Cup is the improvement in the image capture during the matches which results in an significant improvement of broadcasting on mobile phone screens. Vodafone customers will be able to enjoy a unique experience of the 64 live broadcast matches of the 2010 FIFA World Cup™.

The services offered by Vodafone for the 2010 FIFA World Cup™ will also include ‘Live Goals’ and new ‘SMS Championship Alerts’. The ‘Live Goals’ of the Portugal team will provide up-to-the-minute information on all the goals in Portugal’s games. The ‘SMS Championship Alerts’ will send the key information at the end of each match (results, goal scorers and group ranking) and the latest news.

To watch all the games and receive the information about the 2010 FIFA World Cup™, customers simply need to activate the Vodafone Mobile TV service (€1.99 per week). The ‘Live Goals’ alerts cost €0.214 per message received and the ‘SMS Championship Alerts’ cost €1.99, payable once only, entitling customers to receive the alerts during the entire Championship. All these services can be activated on the Vodafone mobile portals (Vodafone live! and My Portal).
