Vodafone Portugal launches exclusive discounts for Foursquare users

Lisbon, 30 November 2010 – Vodafone Portugal today becomes the first Portuguese company to georeference its shops on Foursquare – one of the fastest growing social networks in the world – and to offer exclusive discounts to Foursquare users.

As the result of a partnership between Vodafone Portugal and Foursquare, which started in June this year, and in a pioneering initiative in Portugal, Vodafone is offering a 20 euro discount on the price of a mobile phone each week to the first ‘mayor’ with the most ‘check-ins’ made in one of the Vodafone georeferenced shops identified with the words ‘special offer’.

This weekly offer is valid until 31 December 2010 but others will follow and will always be identified on the service as a ‘special offer’ to let Foursquare users know that they can obtain exclusive benefits by becoming ‘mayor’ of Vodafone shops.

To become ‘mayor’ of a Vodafone shop, customers simply need to log on to Foursquare on their mobile phone and become the user with the most ‘check-ins’ in one of the participating shops. The link to the Foursquare’s mobile site can also be obtained by sending a free SMS to 12345 containing the text ‘4S’.

Vodafone Portugal is also the first Portuguese company with an official page on Foursquare, which can be followed by all users of this social network.

Foursquare permits the publication of ‘check-in’ information on users’ profiles on Facebook and Twitter, together with the associated location map, and to set alerts in real time to find out about the places visited by friends. The cost of using this service (mobile site and apps) is based on the individual Vodafone customer’s Internet access price plan.

The Foursquare social network is based on use of the mobile phone and the localisation of users, enabling them to share information with their friends about where they are and their favourite places, and has experienced tremendous growth, reaching nearly 5 million users around the world in just two years.

With this latest innovative initiative, Vodafone Portugal is reinforcing its focus on the development of services for social networks and its presence in the fastest-growing social networks in the world.
