Vodafone and Lisbon City Council launch city-apps competition

April 16, 2014
At a time when Lisbon is regarded one of the main European capitals for visitors, Vodafone is launching Vodafone Big Apps Lisbon with the support of Lisbon City Council to find and reward the best smartphone apps designed to improve the lives of all who choose the city as a tourist destination or who live or work there.

Combining an ideas competition with a development and acceleration programme for projects with business potential, Vodafone Big Apps Lisbon is intended to attract applications submitted by start-ups and developers. In addition to the City-Apps category, there is also a specific Tourism category supported by CitySDK (a European project involving several cities such as Barcelona, Amsterdam and Rome) which will give participants the opportunity to apply their applications immediately in those European cities.

Three winning teams will be selected to share a total of 30,000 euros divided between the two winners of the “Best City-App” and the “Best Tourism App” categories and the overall winner who will also be entitled to a one-year incubation programme at Vodafone Labs Lisbon. All the winners will also be able to participate in various training and mentoring activities delivered by experts in various commercial and technical areas, have free access to cloud data housing services and a “made-to-measure” marketing plan to promote the app in various Vodafone channels following its market launch.

Applications are invited at http://lisboa.bigapps.co/ until 18 May. The 20 best entries will be selected for a period of development, one-to-one training and refinement of concepts. At the end, a jury of experts will evaluate each of them in the presence of the developer. The three winning projects will be announced on 14 July at the head office of Vodafone Portugal.

This initiative stems from the wish of Vodafone Portugal and Lisbon City Council to foster and accelerate innovation in Portugal by encouraging entrepreneurship. Vodafone Portugal in particular has sought to encourage the creation of sustainable businesses in the area of mobile data through various initiatives of this type. Among them is Vodafone Labs Lisbon, which aims to create opportunities for Portuguese start-ups to develop innovative concepts and promote themselves both nationally and internationally, so contributing to the growth and internationalisation of the technological areas of the Portuguese economy.
