This competition, which is open for entries until 27 April, is divided into four categories: Smart Mobility, Smart Energy, Smart Tourism, and Smart Living. The key requirement is the use of Next Generation Networks technology to make cities more sustainable.
In addition to a prize of €10,000, there are also three honourable mentions: Audience Award (project voted best by the audience), Next Generation Networks (for the project that best exploits the potential of Vodafone’s Next Generation Networks), and the Internet of Things, (for the project that best embodies this trend).
The winner will have the opportunity to develop their project at the Vodafone Power Lab incubator, and receive training, coaching, mentoring and other benefits.
The concept of BIG Smart Cities by Vodafone Power Lab was born in 2013 under the title Lisbon BIG Apps. It attracted more than 10,000 people and over 300 entries, of which 35 were invited onto the pre-acceleration programme. All the winners are currently incubated companies that are generating jobs for more than 20 people.
Vodafone Power Lab is a programme designed to encourage innovation and support entrepreneurship. Its aim is to encourage the creation of technology projects through mentoring, workshops and training, among other possibilities promoting the development of new companies.
Full details of the competition are available at www.bigsmartcities.com.
In addition to the BIG Smart Cities competition, the Vodafone Power Lab programme manages two incubation and start-up acceleration centres, one in Lisbon at Labs Lisboa and another in Porto in partnership with UPTEC, the University of Porto Science and Technology Park. These centres encourage the sharing of competences between the university and business worlds, creating a favourable ecosystem for innovation and the start-up of advanced technology-based companies.
