Vodafone Portugal reaches Gigabit LTE speeds paving the way to 5G – the mobile network of the future – in real tests

Staying at the forefront of innovation, Vodafone Portugal is one of the first European operators to achieve Gigabit LTE speeds, paving the way to 5G. The goal was achieved in a demonstration carried out by Vodafone with Ericsson and Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., a subsidiary of Qualcomm Incorporated, where speeds of 1Gbps were achieved.

The demonstration included the transmission of files to a Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ X16 LTE mobile test device without cable connection and tests to some of the potentialities that this technological innovation will enable in terms of user experience, such as opening a web page instantly or download a 1GB Ultra HD / 4K video in about ten seconds.

In anticipation of what will be the mobile network of the future, Vodafone has been preparing its infrastructures to reach Gigabit LTE speeds in the order of 1Gbps, either by upgrading existing software and developing features such as 256QAM modulation (which allows high information transfer rate), as well as through the installation of antennas with 4×4 MIMO technology and 3x Carrier Aggregation in the downlink.

Another differentiating factor of the investment that Vodafone Portugal has made to continue to affirm itself as leader in terms of innovation in the country is the support for 2x carrier aggregation in the uplink plus 64QAM modulation, allowing the user to send files, for example to social media websites, with transfer speeds up to 150Mbps.

Recognized as the leading telecommunications operator in the quality and performance of its mobile networks, according to the most recent independent study carried out by P3 Communications (world reference for mobile network quality benchmarking), Vodafone continues to work for delivering the best service to its customers. This is another milestone in Vodafone Portugal’s innovation history, which, by enhancing its investment in its next-generation mobile network, has helped to significantly improve the users’ telecommunications experience, bringing more advanced technology to its customers.
